The Office of the Provost is the steward of the Institute's academic enterprise. It consists of the provost, the vice provost and dean of undergraduate education, and the vice provost and dean of graduate education. The deans of each of the five academic schools, the dean of academic and administrative affairs at the Hartford campus, the director of institutional research, the manager for administrative operations, and the manager for academic operations and budget report to the Provost.

Meet the Acting Provost

Mary Simoni, Ph.D., is the Acting Provost of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In this role, she is responsible for all academic portfolios at the Institute, and, in collaboration with the Vice President for Research, works to strengthen the research missions of the Institute. She also plays a significant role in fundraising and external relations.

Dr. Simoni has served as Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences since October 2011. As Dean, she developed new approaches to Institute core curricular requirements through interdisciplinary inquiry-based learning, stabilized the resource base of the School, created new faculty positions to strengthen existing curricula, appropriately resourced existing programs, created interdisciplinary research programs, and participated in Middle State Commission on Higher Education accreditation. She also collaborated with Institute leadership and faculty on the strategic planning process, oversaw Administrative Services and Operations, Business Office, Information Technology, Program Development, and Student Services. She has extensive fundraising experience through alumni events and donor cultivation in partnership with Institute Advancement, and led the School to become recognized as an All Steinway School.

From 2004 to 2011, she was Associate Dean for Research and Community Engagement at the University of Michigan. She served as affiliated faculty in Design Science at the University of Michigan and served as Co-Director for the joint research program between the College of Engineering and the School of Music, Theatre & Dance at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Simoni has a B.Mus, M.Mus, and Ph.D. from Michigan State University.
